Paul is the lyctor born from Palamedes Sextus and Camilla Hect's Grand Lysis.

Biography[]

Nona the Ninth[]

Day Five[]

Paul was born after Palamedes Sextus and Camilla Hect performed what Palamedes dubbed a "Grand Lysis"[1], a mutual death creating something new. Their first act after birth was to offer a crying Nona a handkerchief. Afterwards, they board the megatruck with the rest of Troia Cell (and Kiriona Gaia) and take the wheel.

Paul attempts to drive the megatruck to the Ninth House through the River, but is unable to protect the truck from the waters of the River for long. Nona takes over, and she is able to keep the waters of the River from harming the megatruck briefly. As the River begins to damage the truck, Nona is hesitant to take the truck to the Ninth House and considers letting the River take everyone, but Paul reminds her that Noodle is on the truck. In a panic, Nona floors the accelerator and crashes the truck into the Ninth House.

At the Ninth House, Paul, Pyrrha, Nona, and Kiriona disembark to find the Locked Tomb. Paul offers to heal a wounded Crux, only for Kiriona to point out that Crux might be infected by a devil. Paul, whose memory is split between Palamedes and Camilla's, has to be reminded by Kiriona that they previously witnessed a devil infect Colum Asht.

As the four and Crux descend deeper into the Ninth via elevator, Paul continues to offer to heal Crux, but he refuses the aid of a foreigner. Paul interrogates him on the severity of the devil outbreak, where it is learned much of the Ninth House has been overtaken by the devils. Afterwards, Paul continues to assist the wounded Crux, much to the seneschal's anger.

The group meets with Aiglamene, who leads them to a chamber containing survivors of the devil outbreak. After Pyrrha lets Nona rest, Paul comes over to check up on her, finding that they need to return Nona's soul to its body "five minutes ago, for preference"[2].

At the entrance of the Tomb, Paul and the rest of the group are trapped in a puddle of adipose fat and mucous membrane[3] by Ianthe Tridentarius. Kiriona is freed and argues with Ianthe on whether or not to open the Tomb and awaken Alecto, but when Ianthe reminds her that John loved Alecto, Nona falls apart. As the two Tower Princes rush to Nona's aid, Pyrrha shoots Ianthe with a Herald bullet. Freed from the trap, Pyrrha, Kiriona, and Paul carry Nona into the Tomb as the rock is rolled away. Paul scouts ahead to find all the traps in the Tomb disabled.

Kiriona kills Crux to break the final seal in the Tomb. As the group carries Nona to the lake surrounding Alecto's body, Nona springs free from their grasp, walks into the icy waters, and reunites with her body.

Appearance and Personality[]

Nona initially describes Paul as:

"And it was just Camilla, after all—Camilla having lost all that fringe and most of her hair except for a charred inch or so—Cam with new eyes, and a new face, for all that they were the same-shaped eyes and features. But the eyes were a different colour, though Nona could not see what color from where she sat."[4]
